It’s time to start looking forward to Homecoming Week at UTEP. It’ll be an even bigger bash than usual because this year marks
Make your plans, mark the dates, get your glad rags ready. If you’re from out of town, make your plane reservations. Homecoming is less than a month away.
There have already been some super 100th Anniversary events this year but the football season is the highlight of the year – and making it an even happier event is the fact the Miners are off to a good start on the gridiron.
THE HOMECOMING football game will be held at the Sun Bowl on Saturday, Oct. 11. It’ll pit the Miners against Old Dominion but the celebration will begin on Wednesday, Oct. 8. Receptions for Distinguished Alumni and Gold Nugget winners of each college (Liberal Arts, Health Science, Education, etc.) will be held each day through Saturday starting Oct. 8.
On Thursday, Oct. 9, there will be a Centennial Block Party welcoming all alumni on the UTEP campus on Wiggins Road at 6:30 p.m.
On Friday, Oct. 10, a Distinguished Alumni and Gold Nugget Celebration Gala is set for 6:30 p.m. at the Don Haskins Center.
THE EVENTS on Saturday, Oct. 11, will include a parade from Oregon Street to Glory Road at 1 p.m., a pep rally at Glory Field at 2 p.m. and a UTEP Alumni Association Tailgate Party from 3 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. at Glory Field. The game against Old Dominion will start at 6 p.m. Distinguished Alumni and Gold Nuggets will be introduced at halftime of the game.
I can hardly wait. And you should be there, too. Whether you’re a UTEP grad or not, UTEP has become such a distinguished university it’s something of which all El Pasoans can be proud.
TRIVIA QUESTION: Major League baseball playoffs are upon us. The Major League teams for many years were located in the eastern part of the country but eventually spread from coast to coast. Can you tell me who were the first expansion team pitchers to win a World Series game in both the National and American Leagues? Answer at end of column.
HOW ‘BOUT them Dallas Cowboys? They’re 2-1 going into this weekend, thanks to a thrilling come from behind victory against the St. Louis Rams. There’s been a lot of talk that a holding penalty near the end of the game wasn’t really a penalty but hey, if you look closely enough the Rams’ defender actually grabbed the Cowboy’s jersey. Even if it was just for a moment, it was holding. The most amazing thing about the Cowboys’ two victories this year is that they’ve been on the road. Gotta love them Cowboys.
KRISTI ALBERS, the grand lady of El Paso golf who runs the local First Tee program, sent the following:
“The Girls Golf LPGA-USGA Program will resume this weekend. To join go to Girlsgolf.org and look for the El Paso location. By signing up you will receive a hat, a ball marker and much more. Bring your friends. It’s a great way to learn about golf and meet new friends. The program is for girls 5 and up.”
It’s a great way to get your future golf star on the way to the big time. For more information or questions contact Coach Kristi at Kristeealb@gmail.com.
ANSWER to trivia question: Jerry Koosman of the New York Mets against the Baltimore Orioles in the National League in 1969 and Don Quisenberry of the Kansas City Royals against the Philadelphia Phillies in 1980. If you knew this one, you’re really an expert. I was already working at the El Paso Herald-Post then so I remember it was a big thing at the time.
